🌱  University Offerings: Academic, Research, and Community Outreach

1. Academic Offerings:

  • Problem-Based Learning:
    • Majority of science coursework in the D1 and D2 years taught via problem-based learning
    • Structure: eight students assigned to a group with a facilitator
      • Each group receives a patient case with new aspects/complications added each subsequent session
      • Each student is responsible for researching a part of the case and presenting their research to the rest of the group
  • Clinical Experiences:
    • D1 Year: preclinical training in the simulation laboratory
    • D2 Year: transition to direct patient care and assist in hygiene cases
      • Students also rotate through USC's specialty clinics in this year
    • D3 and D4 Years: introduction to more complex cases in the patient clinic

2. Research Opportunities

  • Five Research Arenas: craniofacial development, microbial infections, tooth and tissue restoration, cancer, and oral health promotion
  • Summer Dental Research Program: incoming DDS students conduct research on campus during the summer before D1 year
    • Incoming students apply to this program following commitment to the university

3. Community Outreach

  • Collaborations in Serving Specific Populations:
    • 1) Dr. Roseann Mulligan Special Patients Clinic: provides comprehensive care for medically compromised and disabled patients
    • 2) USC Dental Clinic at Union Rescue Mission: provides dental care for individuals experiencing homelessness
    • 3) Hollenbeck Palms: nonprofit retirement community where students provide dental care to the elderly
  • Community Mobile Clinics:
    • 1) Queens Care: comprehensive dental care for low-income children in Hollywood area elementary schools
    • 2) Neighborhood Mobile Dental Clinic: provides dental treatment to children at USC partner schools
    • 3) USC Mobile Dental Clinic: required dental rotation for all DDS students
  • Educational Outreach:
    • 1) Teeny Teeth Program: partnership with Young & Healthy in Pasadena to provide free dental services to low-income uninsured children
